Other than pro forma sessions (brief meetings in which no business is discussed), the House will reconvene at noon on Tuesday, January 12, 2010; the Senate at noon on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Tough negotiations will continue as House, Senate, and White House leaders deal with the issue of abortion funding in health care reform. (The House bill prohibits public funding of abortion; the Senate bill opens the door to public funding of abortion.) Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) resorted to buying votes in the Senate to reach the necessary number of 60 AYES to pass his bill. Any changes the House makes to the Senate bill may cost him votes. (An amended version of the Senate bill would still need 60 votes to end debate, and then a simple majority vote to pass the bill.) In the House, the vote on the Stupak-led amendment to prohibit public funding of abortion was 240-194. Sixty-four Democrats joined 176 Republicans to pass the amendment. (To see how your representative voted, go to http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll884.xml). On November 2, 2010, all members of the House of Representatives will have to run for office again; roughly one-third of the Senators will have to run for office again. Please let your representative and senators know how you want them to vote on public funding of abortion. Their ears will be open to your voice because they want your vote in November. For information on finding out who your representative and senators are, go to http://www.unitedtostopabortion.com and open the page entitled Contact Congress.
All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. --Edmund Burke
