When Does Life Begin?

When does life begin?

Human fertilization occurs with the joining of a human egg and a human sperm cell. Most human cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes, making a total of 46. (Chromosomes contain coils of DNA, the chemical that carries genetic information.) Human gametes (sperm or egg cells) have only one set of 23 chromosomes. When fertilization occurs, a zygote is formed. This fertilized egg contains 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent. Because egg and sperm cells go through a process called Recombination where DNA is swapped around, every fertilized egg is unique (with the exception of identical twins). The single cell zygote contains all of the information necessary to turn that one cell into a complex organism.

When you were a zygote, that cell was YOU! If that zygote had been destroyed, YOU would have been destroyed. Allowed to grow, that zygote would not become anything but YOU. YOU began at fertilization.

Abortion destroys a human being. Continue to cry out to God to end the atrocity of abortion in our nation.

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." (Genesis 1:27) "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (Genesis 2:7) All human life is valuable because God has attached value to human beings. This means that not only is the unborn human precious; precious, too, is the life of the abortionist. We in the pro-life movement often transfer our disgust with the act of abortion to the abortionist. Our battle is not against the one doing the abortion; our battle is with the enemy of God who wants to devalue human life. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesians 6:12) Continue to pray for an end to legalized abortion; continue to pray for the rescue of those babies headed to the slaughter; continue to pray for a change of heart in those doing abortions. "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit..."(Ephesians 6:18)

Freedom Ride for Life

On May 4, 1961, in an effort to force the Kennedy administration to support the Civil Rights Movement, an interracial group of Freedom Riders boarded a bus in Washington, D.C., and began a journey to New Orleans. Rather than following the rules of the day in which white passengers took the front seats and black passengers took the back seats, the white Freedom Riders sat in the back of the bus and the black Freedom Riders sat in the front. At rest stops, the black Freedom Riders used the "Whites Only" areas and the white Freedom Riders the areas designated for blacks. The journey was peaceful until the bus reached Alabama. Anticipating problems, the Freedom Riders divided into two groups. The first group was attacked by a mob in Anniston. The bus ended up being firebombed. Members of the second group were beaten in Birmingham. Sympathetic people came to continue the ride, but renewed violence prevented riders from reaching New Orleans. However, the Freedom Ride was successful in that it forced the Kennedy Administration to take a stand in favor of civil rights for all people.

Recognizing the need to bring attention to the plight of babies being aborted in the United States, Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is leading another Freedom Ride, seeking "to transform the culture of death into the culture of life" (see lifenews.com). King is joining with the Priests for Life in leading not only the Freedom Ride, but also a prayer campaign, music fest, and other events to be held in cities across the United States. Elena Kagan and Abortion

When seeking confirmation for the office of solicitor general in 2009, Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan filled out a 51-page questionnaire for the Senate Judiciary Committee in which she was asked to list the organizations to which she belonged or participated in since she was graduated from law school. She wrote the following:

"In a questionnaire I submitted to the Senate in connection with a judicial nomination in 1999, I listed membership in the National Partnership for Women and Families as a result of charitable contributions. I have no current memory of whether such contributions ever made me a member of this organization." (The Wall Street Journal).

The National Partnership for Women and Families, whose president calls Kagan "a superb and brilliant choice" for the Supreme Court(National Partnership), is a defender of women's access to "reproductive health services", a euphemism that includes access to abortion. Note the following statements taken from nationalpartnership.org:

"The National Partnership celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, helps New Jersey become the third state to provide paid leave, and plays a critical defensive role in stopping some of the harmful Bush Administration changes to the Family & Medical Leave Act and regulations affecting women's access to reproductive health services."

"What a difference a year makes! The National Partnership helps lead coalition efforts that result in significant victories, such as enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Children Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act, repeal of the global gag rule, and passage of economic security and health information technology provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."

"We also engage in Supreme Court cases that involve discrimination, sexual harassment, a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health decisions, equal and full application of the Family & Medical Leave Act, and other critical issues."

"Federal judges determine whether companies will be penalized for failing to stop discrimination or sexual harassment, whether workers qualify for time off under the Family & Medical Leave Act, or whether women will have access to the reproductive care they need."

"Our goal is to ensure that the courts operate fairly and free of bias, and are not used to turn back the clock on women’s progress."

The media has been lamenting the fact that Kagan has a short paper trail (i.e. US News and World Report). With little, if any, written words concerning her beliefs on abortion, Kagan can avoid taking a stand on this controversial issue during her confirmation hearings by speaking political double talk. So how do we know her position on abortion? Look at where she has contributed her money. The National Partnership for Women and Families is a supporter of women's reproductive freedom. No where on their website did I see concern expressed for the unborn. Kagan's monetary contributions speak for themselves.

Breast Cancer/Abortion Link?

Does having an abortion increase one's chances of breast cancer? Planned Parenthood says, "No. No. No. No. No. There is no truth to this at all. It is one of those nasty myths invented by anti-choice organizations to frighten women away from having an abortion. Two years ago, the federal government put together a team of researchers to review the many studies that have been done on this over the years. They decided that there were flaws in the studies that linked abortion and breast cancer. The best studies, including one of 1.5 million women in Denmark, have found no link between cancer and abortion — none."

Does having an abortion increase one's chances of breast cancer? "Medical News Today" reports that "An April 2009 study by Jessica Dolle et al. of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center examining the relationship between oral contraceptives (OCs) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in women under age 45 contained an admission from U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) researcher Louise Brinton and her colleagues (including Janet Daling) that abortion raises breast cancer risk by 40%."

Contradictory "evidence" abounds proving there is/is not a connection between breast cancer and abortion. So what is the answer? According to Dr. Joel Brind of Baruch Medical College, "...the public has little awareness of the extent to which medical research is politicized. The mantra 'Keep abortion safe and legal,' is at this point deeply ingrained, to the point where both the profession and the media ignore and suppress evidence of the risks associated with abortion." Dr. Lawrence Huntoon, M.D., Ph.D., states in "The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons" that "Sorting out the science and truth of the matter is of the utmost importance so that relevant informed consent information can be provided to women considering an abortion. Consensus and political correctness must not inhibit the open discussion and evaluation of the scientific data." Setting aside the moral considerations of abortion, there is ample evidence to sustain reasonable concern about a link between abortion and breast cancer. Organizations that claim to care about women's reproductive health issues should provide all available information concerning abortion and breast cancer, and then let patients themselves decide if they want to take this risk.

Battle of Public Funding of Abortion Moves to States

Although the Nelson-Reid Compromise to the health care reform legislation did not prohibit federal funding of abortion, it did specify that “A state may elect to prohibit abortion coverage in qualified health plans offered through an Exchange in such State if such State enacts a law to provide for such a prohibition.” (Newsweek). On April 24, 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law SB 1305, making Arizona the first state to officially opt out of including abortion in the federally mandated state health insurance exchange. Today, Tennessee became the second. House Bill 2681/Senate Bill 2686 became law (see capitol.tn.gov) without the signature of Governor Bredesen. Although he did not sign the legislation which was passed by the Tennessee General Assembly, abortion supporter Bredesen did not veto the bill. Americans United for Life has developed a program, The Federal Abortion-Mandate Opt-Out Act, to help state legislators in opting out of abortion coverage in the state health exchanges. They report that 29 states have already introduced or are planning to introduce opt-out legislation. Please pray that your state legislature will follow suit.

Is Wrong Ever Right?

In 1961, Leonard Hayflick, an employee of Wistar Institute (a research division of the University of Pennsylvania) concluded that fetal cell lines had great potential in the production of vaccines. Dr. Sven Gard of Stockholm, Sweden, who had supplied Hayflick with fetuses for his research, hand picked a fetus from healthy parents with no family history of disease or cancer to send to Hayflick for vaccine production. Lung tissue from this fetus, a female at 3-months gestation, was used to produce the WI-38 human diploid cell line. Around 1970, MRC-5, a second human diploid cell line, was established in Great Britain by the Medical Research Council. The fetal lung cells used in this line came from a male at 14-weeks gestation. These two cell lines continue to thrive in laboratory conditions today.

In order to produce a viral vaccine, scientists need to grow large quantities of the specific virus. Almost all viruses need to be placed in living cells to reproduce. For several decades, scientists have used cell lines WI-38 and MRC-5, lines developed from aborted fetuses, to prepare hundreds of millions of doses of vaccines. Of the vaccinations recommended by the CDC in the United States, the following are usually derived from cell lines from aborted fetuses:

Polio
Measles, Mumps, Rubella
Varicella-Chickenpox
Hepatitis-A

Human cell lines have proven to be effective cultures for the production of vaccines, but biotechnology holds much promise for producing vaccines without using human cells. However, unless pharmaceutical companies are pressured, they will not underwrite the cost of developing an alternative culture. As Christians, we must make our objection to the use of aborted fetuses in vaccine production heard. Wrong is never right.

A Call to Action

As Christians, we often bemoan the state of our nation, but how many of us are trying to change what we don't agree with? The sixteenth chapter of the gospel of Luke records a parable told by Jesus in which a rich man charged his manager with wasting the rich man's possessions. Upon hearing these accusations from his boss, the manager proceeded to call in his master's debtors and reduce the amounts they owed so he would have friends when he lost his job. The master praised the manager, not for being dishonest, but for being shrewd. "For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light." (ESV). The founders of NARAL (originally the National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws) launched a specific campaign to make abortion legal in the United States and, within five years, saw the Roe v. Wade decision legalize abortion on demand. According to founder Dr. Bernard Nathanson, there were three key steps involved in this effort: (1) capture the media, specifically by fabricating results of fictitious polls; (2) make the Catholic hierarchy look like the villain in opposing abortion; and (3) suppress all scientific evidence that life begins at conception. Like the shrewd manager, NARAL founders set their goal and achieved it utilizing dishonest means. The founders of NARAL were shrewd in dealing with their own generation. What about the sons of light who, although under constraint to act righteously, are likewise called to deal with their own generation? In fighting legalized abortion, are Christians being "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16b; ESV)?

Concerning the state of civic engagement in America in 2009, statistics collected by the Pew Research Center show only 30% of adults made at least one contact to a national, state or local government official about an issue; only 15% of adults were active members of a group that tries to influence public policy or government; only 12% of adults attended at least one political rally or speech; only 10% sent a letter to the editor to a newspaper or magazine; only 8% worked or volunteered for a political party or candidate. It is time for all Christians to work for an end to legalized abortion in our nation. We are called to act! Please pray and ask God what you can do to save the helpless victims of abortion. Each one of us in the body of Christ has a role. We have been blessed to be born in a free nation, but our freedom was purchased at a high cost. Let us not sit by and watch this nation sin before the Almighty through legalized murder. Although we are not members of a royal household like Esther, we have been given citizenship in a free land. "And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" (Esther 4:14b; ESV).

Dawn Johnsen Withdraws

In February, 2009, President Obama's nomination of Dawn Johnsen, a former lawyer for the pro-abortion group NARAL, to the position of Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel was sent to the full Senate for confirmation. Partly because Johnsen's extreme pro-abortion sentiments created controversy among Senators, no vote was taken during the last legislative session, and the nomination was returned to President Obama. President Obama renominated Johnsen. Last Friday, Johnsen withdrew her name from consideration. As to the reason for this action, "The Huffington Post" quoted Johnsen as saying, " Restoring OLC to its best nonpartisan traditions was my primary objective for my anticipated service in this administration. Unfortunately, my nomination has met with lengthy delays and political opposition that threaten that objective and prevent OLC from functioning at full strength. I hope that the withdrawal of my nomination will allow this important office to be filled promptly." White House spokesman, Ben LaBolt blamed Johnsen's withdrawal on Senate Republicans playing politics (politico.com). However, it was not just Senate Republicans who were against the nomination. According to mensnewsdaily.com
"some moderate Democrats also planned to vote against her confirmation, including Senators Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania." So now, the next move is President Obama's.

In addition to nominating someone to fill the position of Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel, Obama will soon be nominating someone to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Although our president has been called the most radical pro-abortion president in American history (Christian Coalition of America), his nominations must be approved by the Senate. Please pray that God will continue to burden the hearts of our Senators to desire an end to legalized abortion. The nomination of abortion activist Dawn Johnsen was successfully stopped. May our Senators refuse to give approval to those who support the killing of our unborn citizens.

Planned Parenthood and Government Funding

People who are not deceptive in their dealings with others often find it difficult to recognize deception in others. There are innumerable documented statements by Margaret Sanger, the recognized founder of Planned Parenthood (according to plannedparenthood.org), that show her true intent in being a proponent of birth control (pleasure and eugenics):

"On the contrary, the most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective." ("The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda" by Margaret Sanger)

"Birth control must lead ultimately to a cleaner race." ("Woman, Morality, and Birth Control" by Margaret Sanger)

"The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it." ("Women and the New Race" by Margaret Sanger)

"We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferable with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. One look at plannedparenthood.org shows that sexual pleasure without guilt or pregnancy is promoted. The site gives information (often complete with pictures) of sexual anatomy; sexual pleasure; masturbation; sexual diseases; abortion; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender services; and on and on. There is also a section specifically for teens with similar information. As to eugenics, according to statistics presented by Susan W. Enouen, P.E., Planned Parenthood today targets African Americans for abortion.

In speaking at the Family Research Council Values Voter Summit in 2008, Representative Michele Bachman (Minnesota) spoke of the ridiculousness of Planned Parenthood, an organization with a budget surplus of $115 million, being given tax breaks and government grants. "They are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization, which means they pay no taxes. Planned Parenthood pays no taxes and they receive over $300 million per year in grants from the federal government. So if you combine that failure to pay taxes, which would equal 35%, plus over $300 million in grants--their income should be about $300 million a year."

How did the federal government end up funding Planned Parenthood? According to Jim Sedlak, for 47 years after its founding, Planned Parenthood survived on donations and clinic fees. Then in 1964, Planned Parenthood received money during the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson under the claim of providing reproductive "healthcare" to poor women. In 1970, under Title X of the Health and Human Services Act, federal funding for Planned Parenthood exploded.

If you don't like the idea of your tax money supporting Planned Parenthood, what can you do? The first action is prayer. Second, get in touch with your Senators and Representative and make your wishes known. Third, question candidates about their stand on this issue. Fourth, don't give up!

Stupak Defends His Vote

In his article "Why I wrote the 'Stupak Amendment' and voted for health-care reform" ("Washington Post"), Representative Bart Stupak makes a sobering claim: "The true motives of many blogs and organizations claiming to be pro-life have become clear in recent days: to politicize life issues as a means to defeat health care reform." There is truth in what Representative Stupak has claimed. However, his statement idicating that the 216 votes required for House passage of the bill would be forthcoming without his (and his chiseled-down group of supporting representatives) vote is questionable. The health-care reform bill passed the House with a 219-212 vote. If only four of the once dozen or so members of the "Stupak Bloc" remained firm that the Stupak language be included in the final health-care reform legislation, the bill would not have had the necessary 216 votes. Further evidence of the need for the Stupak bloc in passing the health-care reform legislation is the fact that pro-abortion President Obama agreed to issue the executive order as a last minute concession to get the Stupak votes. Representative Stupak admits that "an executive order is not as strong as the statutory language we fought for at the start." Representative Stupak is pro-life, but, in the eyes of many pro-lifers, he settled for less than the best. May God give us political leaders who will not compromise on the issue of life.

The Word is Enforcement

Representative Bart Stupak (Michigan), who had been a "no" vote on the Senate health care reform bill, changed his vote to "yes" when President Obama agreed to issue an executive order banning federal funding of abortion. Historically, executive orders have been legally binding and, though they do not require the approval of Congress, have carried the same weight as a law passed by Congress. If the President issues an executive order that Congress doesn't like, Congress, which has the constitutional power to make laws, may rewrite the law, charging the President to act in a certain way. Some claim that executive orders enable the President to usurp power that is not constitutionally granted. In 1952, President Truman issued an executive order seizing control of the steel industry in an effort to avoid a strike. The owners of the steel companies involved immediately challenged the order in court. The case went to the Supreme Court, and the Truman order was ruled unconstitutional. According to findingdulcinea.com, Justice Hugo Black, who wrote the majority decision, penned, “In the framework of our Constitution, the President's power to see that the laws are faithfully executed refutes the idea that he is to be a lawmaker. The Constitution limits his functions in the lawmaking process to the recommending of laws he thinks wise and the vetoing of laws he thinks bad.” Provided President Obama's executive order that was issued as a grudging concession to pro-life Democrats in the House is not overturned in court, the order should carry the weight of law. Does that mean that pro-abortion President Obama, who is charged by the Constitution to see that laws are faithfully executed, will enforce this order? Does that mean that pro-abortion Attorney General Eric Holder, who, according to www.justice.gov, is "the chief law enforcement officer of the Federal Government" will enforce this order? Does this mean that pro-abortion Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will ensure that her department carries out this order? No, no, and no! President Obama's order is only as good as the power of enforcement behind it.

Eleventh Hour Influence

Pro-life Democrats in the House seem to be having an eleventh hour influence on the House negotiations on health care reform. "The Hill" reported that pro-life Representative Bart Stupak spoke with Speaker Nancy Pelosi this evening, after which a group of angry pro-abortion Democrats stormed into Pelosi's office. These pro-abortion representatives are renewing their threat to kill the bill if it has language prohibiting public funding of abortion. In an interview with "The Hill" last Wednesday, Stupak said that he is fine with the passage of the Senate bill. “You know, maybe for me that’s the best: I stay true to my principles and beliefs,” he said, and “vote no on this bill and then it passes anyways. Maybe for me it's the best thing to do.” With all of the abuse this representative has taken because of his pro-life stand, it saddens me to hear that he would be relieved with the passage of the pro-abortion bill as long as he doesn't vote for it. Please continue to pray for Representative Stupak. He has been a leader in this fight, and he and his family have been harassed because of his stand. May God strengthen this man to fight for the lives of unborn babies.

Cloaking the Vote

In speaking with Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday", White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the Democrats will have the votes to pass health care reform this week, and next Sunday's shows "will be talking about health care not as a presidential proposal but I think as the law of the land." So how do the Democrats plan to get from here to there? According to Dan Holler, the Senate Relations Deputy for The Heritage Foundation, the House Budget Committee will meet Monday to mark up a reconciliation bill that will serve as a shell bill; the Rules Committee will then meet (possibly as early as Wednesday) to take out whatever was in the reconciliation bill and insert a new bill from Speaker Pelosi's office; then the "Slaughter Rule" will be used to pass the Senate health care reform bill without voting on it.

Representative Louise Slaughter (New York) is the Chairwoman of the powerful House Committee on Rules, which makes the rules for each bill that is sent to the floor. In this case, a rule would be made that "deems" the Senate health care reform bill as passed as soon as the House approves the correction bill to the Senate bill. In this way, Representatives would not have to cast a vote on the controversial health care reform bill, but could still pass it. Contrary to what the President's Senior Advisor David Axelrod said on "Meet the Press" today ("the one thing I'm sure of is that the American people don't know or care much about the sequencing of parliamentary procedures"), the American people are extremely concerned about the parliamentary procedures being used in Washington. There is great concern about votes being carried on under a cloak of darkness. Why would a vote be taken under such a smokescreen? John 3:19 tells us that people loved darkness more than the light because their deeds were evil. Abortion is the taking of human life made in the image of God. Taxpayer funding of abortion would increase the incident of abortion in this country. 1 John 1:5 tells us that God is light and there is no darkness in Him. May our country's leaders not hide in darkness but come clean in the light of the Holy God.

Pass the Bill to Find Out What is in It?

The content of the speech made today by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the 2010 Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties is published on the Speaker's official website, www.speaker.gov. In the speech, Speaker Pelosi made the following comment about the final health care legislation: "But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy." Is this the proper proceedure for elected officials to follow? Passing legislation and then letting the voters find out what is in it? We know that the health care reform bill passed by the Senate on Christmas Eve opens the door for public funding of abortion. President Obama's subsequent health care proposal does not address the subject of abortion. According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey found on www.cnn.com, six in 10 Americans favor a ban on the use of federal funds for abortion. Our pro-abortion Speaker of the House is ignoring the wishes of Americans and is seeking to pass her own agenda. Please pray that God will raise up more Congressmen and Congresswomen who will listen to the desires of the voters. May the abortion-promoting health care reform bill suffer a sound defeat!

Just Add the Language, Speaker Pelosi

Claims are still being made by supporters of the President's health care reform plan that no changes will be made to the current policy of no federal funding of abortion. The following quotes about the health care bill appear on abcnews.go.com (the website for "Good Morning America"):

"There is no change in the access to abortion, no more no less. It is abortion neutral," Pelosi (Speaker of the House) told reporters. "If you believe that there should be no federal funding for abortion, and if you believe that there should be no change in policy... we will pass the bill."

"I think the president has made it clear from the outset that the health reform bill should not change the status quo on abortion policy in America. That's not what this is about," Sebelius (Secretary of Health and Human Services) said. "There will be no federal funding for abortions."

It appears that Representative Bart Stupak and 11 other Democrat colleagues will not vote for the health care bill because it does not contain explicit language prohibiting public funding of abortion. Some supporters of the health care bill fear this issue may lead to its defeat. If Speaker Pelosi and Secretary Sebelius are being honest when they say that the President's health care bill does not allow for federal funding of abortion, then they should have no problem including language to that effect. They could end this argument. So why don't they? The answer is simple: the health care bill the President wants to pass does allow public funding of abortion. Please pray that Representative Stupak, who would like to see the passage of a health care bill, will continue to stand true to his belief that taxpayers should not be forced to fund the killing of babies in our country.

Reconciliation Won't Stop Abortion Funding

President Obama is working to get the House to pass the Senate health care bill with the stipulation that changes will be made to the bill under the process of budget reconciliation. The current Senate bill opens the door for taxpayer funding of abortion. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced in a press conference today that prohibiting the funding of abortion is not an option for the reconciliation process. According to thehill.com, Speaker Pelosi, referring to the issues of abortion funding and immigration, had this to say:

"PELOSI: Under the budget resolution you can only take up issues that are central to the budget. None of these issues..are dealt with in the budget.

"Neither of these issues is central to the bill. This is not an immigration bill, this is not an abortion bill. It is a bill that would provide
more healthcare for all Americans.

"QUESTION: Is that your message to your Democrats? That these issues are not central to the bill? Because they are in the Senate bill.

"PELOSI: They are not central to the budget. That's what I just said. In order to be part of the budget bill, it has to be central to the budget....It's a very strict rule."

So, can Speaker Pelosi deliver enough votes to pass the Senate health care bill? Representative Bart Stupak (Michigan), who has taken much abuse because he insisted on an amendment to the House bill to prohibit public funding of abortion, has indicated he will not accept the Senate wording concerning the funding of abortion. At the White House health care summit held today at the Blair House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in response to House Minority Leader John Boehner's remarks that the President's health care proposal allows for the first time in 30 years taxpayer funding of abortion, heatedly said that "there is no public funding of abortion in these bills and I don't want our listeners or viewers to get the wrong impression from what you said." If there is no public funding of abortion in these bills, then why is Speaker Pelosi opposed to explicit language prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion? The November 7, 2009, edition of The New York Times, in discussing the Democratic struggle with abortion funding in the House health care bill, reported the following: "It was late Friday night and lawmakers were stalling for time. In a committee room, they yammered away, delaying a procedural vote on the historic health care legislation. Down one floor, in her office, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi desperately tried to deal with an issue that has bedeviled Democrats for more than a generation — abortion. After hours of heated talks, the people she was trying to convince — some of her closest allies — burst angrily out of her office.

"Her attempts at winning them over had failed, and Ms. Pelosi, the first woman speaker and an ardent defender of abortion rights, had no choice but to do the unthinkable. To save the health care bill she had to give in to abortion opponents in her party and allow them to propose tight restrictions barring any insurance plan that is purchased with government subsidies from covering abortions.

"The restrictions were necessary to win support for the overall bill from abortion opponents who threatened to scuttle the health care overhaul."

The Stupak amendment, which prohibited taxpayer funding of abortion and which was opposed by Nancy Pelosi, was passed by the House of Representatives and became a part of the House health care bill. The health care proposal passed by the Senate did not include an explicit prohibition on taxpayer funded abortion. The President's plan, which was the basis of discussion at the White House health care summit held today, does not prohibit taxpayer funding of abortion. Under the Senate bill and the White House proposal, which is based on the Senate bill, the door is wide open for public funding of abortion.

Obama's Proposed Health Care Reform

Last September when speaking to Congress, President Obama clearly stated that under the Democratic health care reform plan "no federal dollars will be used to fund abortion." Not only does the health care reform bill passed by the Senate permit federal dollars to fund abortion, but President Obama's proposed modifications to the bill which were released today do nothing to stop federal funding of abortion. On the contrary, Douglas Johnson, the legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee, says President Obama's propsal increases the potential for this funding. According to nrlc.org, Johnson contends, "If all of the President's changes were made, the resulting legislation would allow direct federal funding of abortion on demand through Community Health Centers, would institute federal subsidies for private health plans that cover abortion on demand (including some federally administered plans), and would authorize federal mandates that would require even non-subsidized private plans to cover elective abortion." Our pro-abortion president has every intention of pushing the funding of abortion on American citizens. Please notify your Senators and Representative that you are watching what they do and will hold them responsible for their votes on health care. Final Health Care Reform Bill

The current Democratic plan to pass health care reform involves the House passage of the Senate health care reform bill, with the understanding among the Democratic leaders that a follow-up attachment to the bill containing agreed-upon changes will be passed under the reconciliation process. This process, which was instituted to prevent a minority of Senators from stalling the passage of legislation necessary to reconcile the budget, does away with the filibuster by limiting the time allowed for debate, and requires only a majority vote. By assigning budget specifications regarding health care issues to different committees, the Democratic leadership hopes to pass their bill under budget reconciliation without Republican interference. According to thehill.com, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) said the final Democratic bill will probably be unveiled Monday night.

So where does this leave the issue of abortion funding in health care reform? The Senate health care reform bill provides for government funding of abortion. President Obama has expressed his disagreement with the House's Stupak Amendment that prohibits government funding of abortion. It is highly unlikely that President Obama, who made this final Democratic health care reform bill a top priority, has agreed to prohibit federal funding of abortion. If our government begins funding abortion in our nation, the incident of abortion will rise dramatically. Reverse Roe v.Wade?

Attempts to reverse the results of the Roe v. Wade 1973 Supreme Court decision have failed. Proposed Constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority in each house to pass. In 1974, the National Right to Life Committee proposed a constitutional amendment that stated unborn persons are included in the protections specified in the 5th and 14th articles of amendment to the Constitution of the United States. This proposal did not succeed. Thereafter, a similar amendment, the Paramount Amendment, was presented. This amendment, which proposed that the right to life is vested in every human being from the moment of fertilization, was melded with the Right to Life Committee's amendment, but it failed. In 1983, the Hatch-Eagleton amendment, which states the right to abortion was not "secured" by the Constitution, made it to the floor of the Senate. Forty-nine Senators voted in favor, but sixty-seven votes were needed to get a two-thirds majority. In 1981, Senator Jesse Helms and Representative Henry Hyde pushed for the passage of a human life statute, which declared that human life begins at conception. This statute required only a simple majority vote, but was defeated in the Senate. Because of the unceasing efforts of organized pro-life groups, the fight for a legal end to the effects of the Roe v. Wade decision has continued to gain momentum. Three acts have been introduced in the 111th Congress. On January 7, 2009, Representative Paul Broun (Georgia) introduced H.R. 227--Sanctity of Human Life Act to provide that human life shall be deemed to begin with fertilization. House bill 227 was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. On January 29, 2009, Senator Roger Wicker (Mississippi) introduced S. 346--Life at Conception Act to implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person. Senate bill 346 was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. On February 4, 2009, Representative Duncan Hunter (California) introduced H.R. 881--Right to Life Act to implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person. House bill 881 was referred to the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. A bill has to make it out of a committee before it can go to the floor for action. Most bills never come out of committee. Please pray that God will move on the hearts of committee members to send sanctity of life bills to the floor for debate. With the advent of minimally invasive surgeries, the video taping of surgical procedures has become easy. According to a report by Gina Kolata in the "New York Times", some doctors "got the idea that offering patients movies of their surgeries would bolster confidence -- after all, a doctor who is willing to film himself at work must be pretty darn confident." She goes on to say that Patrick Malone, "a Washington lawyer who represents patients in malpractice suits, said that, as far as he is concerned, the only argument for not taping is fear." Doctors who give patients video tapes of surgeries are not trying to hide facts. Nothing is concealed. Upon looking at "Legislation to Watch" on the website of NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland (www.prochoicemaryland.org), one wonders what NARAL is trying to conceal. Listed as "Anti-Choice Legislation" is the following information about a bill proposed in the Maryland Senate:

Single-Issue Voter

The Prometheus Institute published an article by Matt Fay entitled "The Problem with Single-Issue Voters; How to Vote Like an Adult" in which Fay argues that single-issue voting is not smart. He states: "Single-issue voters can be like petulant children throwing a temper tantrum. They withhold their votes from certain candidates in an act equivalent to sitting in a corner and holding their breath until they get their way. The same thing happens in the political world as it does to that child. They usually run out of breath before they get their way. The right to vote was restricted to those eighteen years of age and older because it was believed that adults were more likely to look at the issues logically and make a reasonable decision based on a range of factors. The single-issue vote flies in the face of this concept." I would agree with Fay that a candidate who supports my single-issue may not be qualified to hold the office he or she is seeking; however, a candidate who does not support my single-issue is not qualified to hold any office. Abortion is taking a human life. The zygote formed at the fusion of a human egg and a human sperm is a unique human life in the earliest stage of development. Any candidate who supports or condones the killing of this life is not qualified to hold any elected position in our government. Single-issues do not qualify a candidate to hold office, but single-issues may disqualify a candidate to hold office. Please check each candidate's stand on the legalized murder of unborn babies before stepping into the voting booth.

Bachmann and Clark, 6th District, Minnesota

Minnesota State Senator Tarryl Clark is a candidate for Minnesota's 6th congressional district currently held by Congresswoman Michele Bachmann. Clark, a Democrat backed by Emily's List (whose mission, as stated on emilyslist.org, is to build "a progressive America by electing pro-choice Democratic women to office") is fighting to represent a district that has historical been anti-abortion. Clark seems to be skirting the subject of abortion. There is a noticeable omission of "abortion" on the "Issues" page of Clark's website (www.tarrylclark.com). In an interview with Eric Black, recorded on www.minnpost.com, Clark responded to questions about her stand on abortion by talking about preventing unwanted pregnancies, as seen in the following transcript:

Me(Eric Black): "You are pro-choice, I take it?"

Clark: "I have worked hard to reduce abortions. I will continue to do that. The three things we can and should be doing -- and I think most people agree with this -- is to reduce unwanted pregnancies, increase adoptions, help with family stability issues. We can eliminate 90-95 percent of all abortions and it would be good to have representation that understands and has actually worked on those issues..."

Me: "But you nonetheless do support a woman’s right to choose?"

Clark: "If somebody wants to be voting for someone who’s going to reduce abortion, I’m the one with a track record..."

Me: "But there’s a basic question that you’re dancing around. For people who are interested in the basic pro-life, pro-choice division..."

Clark: "We can eliminate 90-95 percent of all abortions but then at the end of the day you want it to be rare, safe and legal."

Make no mistake about it. Even though Clark is playing down the fact, she is pro-abortion. Emily's List does not support candidates who are pro-life.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, the current representative from Minnesota's 6th congressional district, is pro-life, and she does not hide her stand. Bachmann's website (bachmann.house.gov) posts the following: "Additionally, I firmly believe the right to life extends to all people – including the born and unborn. I am a member of the bi-partisan Congressional Prayer Caucus and believe that our nation must never be ashamed of its Judeo-Christian roots and faith." Bachmann's rating from the National Right to Life Committee on pro-life voting is 100%.

Please pray for Representative Bachmann to be reelected in the November election. There are few pro-life women in our House of Representatives; our country does not need to lose this voice for the unborn.

Dawn Johnsen Renominated

President Obama has resubmitted his nomination of Dawn Johnsen for Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel. In February, 2009, Obama's nomination of Johnsen, a former lawyer for the pro-abortion group NARAL, was sent to the full Senate for confirmation. Because Johnsen's extreme pro-abortion sentiments created controversy among Senators, no vote was taken during the last legislative session, and the nomination was returned to President Obama. In spite of the Republican gain of the 41st vote in the Senate, ending the Democrat filibuster-proof Senate, President Obama has renominated Johnsen. If confirmed, Johnsen would join an ever-expanding group of pro-abortion activists in the Obama administration. Congressman Chris Smith (New Jersey) commented on Obama's appointments at the Right to Life Convention last summer: "Then there are Mr. Obama’s hundreds of strategic appointments including members of the Cabinet and sub Cabinet and a myriad of program directors and deputies including Dawn Johnsen—a former NARAL lawyer who derisively refers to pregnant women as fetal containers. Personnel is policy. With little fanfare, the Abortion President has stuffed and is in the process of stuffing the federal bureaucracy from top to bottom with some of the most extreme pro-abortionists on the planet. Pro-Life Americans Growing in Number

Although Americans elected what some have called the most aggressively pro-abortion president in the history of the United States, public opinion in this country about abortion is changing. According to a Gallup Poll conducted in May, 2009, 51% of Americans call themselves "pro-life", while 42% call themselves "pro-choice". According to gallup.com, this is the first time a majority of American adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup started including this question in 1995. This same poll revealed an increase in the pro-life position among Protestants (an eight-point gain from last year) and Catholics (a seven-point gain from last year). This is good news! Please pray that the pro-life message will continue to gain support, and that the increase in the number of Americans who are pro-life will translate into more elected representatives and senators who are pro-life. May voters in the United States refuse to compromise on protecting the unborn.

Scott Brown and Abortion

Scott Brown, elected by the voters of Massachusetts to fill the vacated seat of the late Edward Kennedy, promised to be the 41st vote to block the Democrat abortion-funding health care reform bill. Pro-life Americans, relieved that the abortion-funding health care reform bill seems to be dead, still need to be on guard. With an aggressively pro-abortion administration, the issue of government funding of abortion is not going away. Although Scott Brown is against the Democrat health care reform bill, he is not against abortion. According to ontheissues.org, Brown has stated he supports legalized abortion and strong parental consent notification laws, but he is against federal funding of abortion and against partial-birth abortion. Health Care Reform Not Dead

With the election of Republican Scott Brown (Massachusetts) to the Senate seat formerly held by Democrat Ted Kennedy, the Democrats no longer hold a filibuster-proof Senate, but this does not mean the attempt to pass an abortion-funding health care bill is over. Two possible courses of action the Democrats might take to pass their legislation were mentioned previously (House passage of the Senate health care bill with no amendments; the reconciliation procedure). A third course of action would be to convince a Republican senator to cross party lines and vote with the Democrats. At his press briefing on Tuesday (January 19), Robert Gibbs gave the following response when asked why the President and the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) didn't work harder to keep Republican Senator Olympia Snowe (Maine) on their side: "The President continues to work hard on that." Senator Snowe voted for the Senate Finance Committee's health care reform bill. According to the official statement released by Senator Snowe after Scott Brown's win in Massachusetts, she will "continue to play a constructive role to improve the bill". She states that constituents in Maine are concerned about the costs and fees in the health care reform bill. If Reid gives special concessions to pacify small businesses in Maine, would Senator Snowe vote for the bill? Please continue to pray that our government will not facilitate abortion by funding it. Please pray that Senator Snowe will change her pro-abortion stand.

Health Care Reform and the Massachusetts Race

The eyes of the nation are on tomorrow's special election in Massachusetts. Polls show Republican Scott Brown is leading Democrat Martha Coakley in the contest for the Senate seat held by the late Senator Ted Kennedy. Brown's election and seating in the Senate would give the Republicans 41 votes, causing the Democrats to lose their filibuster-proof majority. If the House of Representatives does not pass the unamended Senate health care bill, the Democrats would then have to use questionable tactics to strong-arm the passage of health care reform. Their options could include the following ploys: (1)stalling the certification and seating of Scott Brown until after a Senate vote on an amended health care bill; (2)using reconciliation as a way to pass big parts of the health care reform bill. A reconciliation bill is usually developed by various committees and includes provisions that affect the federal budget. It requires only a majority vote to pass and is not subject to filibuster on the floor of the Senate. Prospect.org explains the way reconciliation could be used to pass health care reform: "Imagine you want to run health reform through the reconciliation process. Here's how it works: Congress includes reconciliation instructions in the budget. Those instructions direct certain committees -- say, the Finance Committee and the Health, Energy, Labor, and Pensions Committee -- to produce health-reform legislation hitting certain spending targets by a certain deadline. Once finished, the legislation is tossed back to the Budget Committee, which staples it together into an omnibus bill and sends it to the floor of the Senate for 20 hours of debate followed by an up-or-down vote." A provision for government funding of abortion could easily pass this way. With a pro-abortion President and pro-abortion leaders in the House and Senate, our nation is in grave danger of facilitating abortion. Virtual March for Life

January 22, 2010, marks the 37th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision in which the Supreme Court established a "trimester" ruling that made null all state laws that prohibited abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy. States were allowed to regulate abortion in the second trimester only to protect the health of the mother. During the third trimester, when the baby is viable, abortion was still allowed if needed to protect the life or health of the mother. The decision defined the "health of the mother" in very broad terms. As a result, abortion became legal anytime during pregnancy. On January 22, 1974, an estimated 20,000 pro life Americans gathered in Washington to show their concern for aborted babies. March for Life was incorporated that year and has held yearly marches in Washington, with the number of marchers reaching the hundreds of thousands. Because of the pressing need to stop government funding of abortion in health care reform, Americans United for Life Action is offering pro life Americans who are not able to go to Washington for the annual March for Life this year to still make their presence known by joining in a virtual march. Manager's Amendment Opens Door for Abortion Funding

The National Right to Life Committee released a memo yesterday stating that the manager's amendment to the Senate health care bill contains language making a direct appropriation of funds for Community Health Centers. The NRLC went on to state that there is nothing that would prohibit these funds from being used for abortions. The Senate health care bill itself is 2,074 pages long; the manager's amendment adds 383 pages. The fact that the National Right to Life Committee, a group that has examined the House and Senate bills in depth, is just now discovering this language allowing abortion funding makes it imperative that explicit language prohibiting federal funding of abortion be a part of any final health care bill. Please pray that God will raise up Christians in the Senate and House who will speak out for the unborn. During the House recess, Representative Bart Stupak (Michigan) made a week-long tour of his district (the western Upper Penninsula)and talked with his constituents. According to The Wall Street Journal, Stupak, whose name has become synonymous with stopping federal funding of abortion in health care, estimates two-thirds of the voters in his district favor the Stupak Amendment. The Journal goes on to state that Stupak, in speaking about the abortion language that will be written in the final health care bill that melds the pro-abortion funding Senate bill and the anti-abortion funding House bill, says "he is confident that his stricter language (the Stupak Amendment) will remain in the final bill because 10 to 12 House Democrats won't vote for it unless his language -- or something very close -- is included." Last February, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to move President Obama's nomination of Dawn Johnsen for the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel to the full Senate for confirmation. Ms. Johnsen, a former lawyer for the pro-abortion group NARAL, was opposed by many Republican Senators due to her pro-abortion extremism, evidenced in a Supreme Court brief where she equated "forced pregnancy" with "involuntary servitude." According to gop.gov, she has stated that "abortion restrictions 'reduce pregnant women to no more than fetal containers.'" In addition, she has opposed the Supreme Court decision to uphold a ban on partial birth abortion. Her nomination never received a Senate vote during the last legislative session, and the Senate returned the nominee to the President. No Transparency in Final Health Care Negotiations

According to huffingtonpost.com, the Democrat leadership of the House and the Senate will not call a conference committee to iron out differences between the House and Senate health care bills; rather, they will do their work behind closed doors. The Senate bill will be the basis for negotiation, with amendments being added. This will prevent opponents of specific items in the bill from making motions to recommit (send the bill back to committee), and will thus eliminate debate and delays. According to lifenews.com, President Obama met today with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in the Oval Office, with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin joining by telephone, to discuss strategy. The White House has already expressed displeasure with the House's Stupak Amendment(prohibiting federal funding of abortion). House leadership was also not pleased with the amendment. According to politico.com, a meeting of Democrat leaders of the House of Representatives was held today at 1:00, with the purpose of mapping out the House strategies for negotiations with the Senate on the final version of health care legislation. In addition to the elected Democrat House leaders, the meeting included Representative George Miller (California), chairman of the Education and Labor Committee; Representative Henry Waxman (California), chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee; Representative Charles Rangel (New York), chairman of the Ways and Means Committee; and Representative Louise Slaughter (New York), chairwoman of the House Committee on Rules. Every member of this group voted against the Stupak Amendment (amendment to prohibit federal funding of abortion). Representative Bart Stupak (Michigan) told the Bay City Times that he has asked to be on the conference committee (made up of selected members of the House and Senate, and formed to iron out the differences in the House and Senate health care bills), but "I doubt they'll let me because of the amendment. I'll still be in the room, though.” Please pray that there will be a voice for prohibiting federal funding of abortion in the negotiations on the final version of health care. Health Care Reform--What Happens Next?

In order for a bill to become a law, both chambers of Congress must pass the identical legislation. The House and Senate versions of health care legislation are markedly different, especially on the issue of abortion funding. Unless the House passes the Senate version, a conference committee will be formed to smooth out the differences. A conference committee traditionally includes the senior members of the standing committees (House and Senate) that worked on the legislation. If this tradition is followed, the health care reform conference committee will consist of abortion advocates. With the pressure from these pro-abortion lawmakers, coupled with the pressure from our pro-abortion President, Representative Bart Stupak (Michigan), who demanded a prohibition on public funding of elective abortion in the House legislation, is on the hot seat. Stupak told CNS News that top Congressional Democrats and the White House have asked him to be quiet on the issue until they have a chance to try to "sell him" the language of the Reid-Nelson Senate compromise on abortion funding. Stupak responded, “Well, I don't need anyone to sell me the language. I can read it. I've seen it. I've worked with it. I know what it says. I don't need to have a conference with the White House. I have the legislation in front of me here." Stupak added, “We're getting a lot of pressure not to say anything, to try to compromise this principle or belief. That’s just not us. The next step in health care reform will be merging the House health care bill (Affordable Health Care for America Act) and the Senate health care bill (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act). The two biggest differences in the bills involve (1) a public option (a government insurance plan) and (2) abortion funding. The House bill provides a public option; the Senate bill does not. The House bill prohibits federal subsidies from being used to pay for elective abortions; the Senate bill does not. Apart from the House passing the Senate's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a conference committee composed of representatives and senators will be formed to meld the two bills. Because of the deals Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) hustled through in order to barely pass his bill, any revision, especially on abortion funding, will probably not be approved by the Senate. Representative Bart Stupak (Michigan) has said he will fight the abortion funding language of the Senate bill. Two questions remain: Can Representative Stupak get enough support from other representatives to stop abortion funding? Pro-life Votes for Sale?

In a vote of 60-40, the Senate voted to invoke cloture and end the filibuster on the Reid amendments to the health care bill. Two more proceedural votes will be taken (a vote to close debate on whether to add the compromises to the bill, and a vote to close debate on the bill) before the anticipated Christmas Eve vote on the bill itself. Once the Senate health care bill passes, the House and Senate must agree on one version of a health care bill. Currently, public funding of elective abortions is prohibited in the House bill; it is allowed in the Senate bill. Democrat Senator Ben Nelson, who had a consistently pro-life voting record, sold his pro-life vote for a guarantee of permanent, 100% federal funding of Medicaid expansion in his state of Nebraska. Will the House pro-life Democrats sell their votes, too? God forbid that our leaders make it easier for Americans to get elective abortions by using our tax money to fund them! 1:00 AM Cloture Vote

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's health care bill with his manager's amendment (the compromises Reid has added to get the 60 votes necessary to end the Republican filibuster) has been introduced to the Senate floor. Yesterday Republicans, using a delaying tactic, requested that the entire 383-page amendment be read on the Senate floor. The Senate will convene at 1:00 PM today to continue debating the bill. At 11:30 PM, the Senate will take a 30-minute break. A cloture vote (the only procedure the Senate has to place a time limit on consideration of a bill and thus break a filibuster) will be taken at 1:00 AM Monday morning on the manager's amendment. The cloture vote requires 60 votes to pass and, with the sell-out of Senator Nelson (Nebraska) on abortion funding, Reid says he has the 60 votes.

Our nation stands in danger of changing our long-standing principle of not using public funds to pay for elective abortions. I pray that our Senators will be sobered by the realization they will one day have to stand before Almighty God and give account for their votes. May God convict them that abortion is the taking of human life. There is still time for Senators to change their minds on this issue and block the abortion-funding legislation. Senator Ben Nelson (Nebraska) announced at a press conference this morning that he will support the Senate health care bill, stating that he reached an acceptable compromise with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nebraska) on abortion and other issues. The compromise Senator Nelson has agreed to does not prohibit federal funding of abortion. According to Reverend Patrick J. Mahoney, director of Christian Defense Coalition, the Nelson-Reid compromise will allow for public funding of abortion. He added that it looks like Senator Nelson "has sold out his pro-life principles and America's children for millions in subsidies to help Nebraska pay its Medicare and Medicaid costs." In a statement to LifeNews, Senator John Cornyn (Texas) said, "Make no mistake about it, the Reid bill will allow federal tax dollars to be used to fund abortions." Senator Tom Coburn (Oklahoma) agrees that the Nelson-Reid compromise does not ban abortion funding. With Senator Nelson on board to vote in favor of the Senate health care bill, Reid says he now has the 60 votes necessary. Reid has filed cloture to pave the way to a Senate vote on the bill. In trying to obtain 60 votes to invoke cloture on the Senate health care bill (H.R.3590), Democrat leadership in the Senate has agreed to remove the public option and any expanded government insurance coverage from the bill. This move has put Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, who will not vote for the health care bill with the current abortion-funding provisions, as the possible deciding vote. According to Michael Goldfarb of "The Weekly Standard", a Senate aide reported that the White House is threatening to put Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) list if Senator Nelson doesn't fall in line. The closing of this base, the home of the U.S. Strategic Command, would be a big economic hardship to Nebraska. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) is currently working with Senator Bob Casey (Pennsylvania) to come up with abortion language that Senator Nelson and pro-abortion Senators will both accept. In a push to get the required 60 votes needed to pass H.R.3590 (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) is seeking a compromise on abortion. Over the weekend, according to the "The New York Times", Mr. Reid tried "to concoct a compromise on abortion that would induce Senator Ben Nelson, Democrat of Nebraska, to vote for the bill." Senator Bob Casey (Pennsylvania), purportedly a pro-life Catholic, has emerged as a key player in finding language that both sides of the issue will accept. "The New York Times" reports that Senator Casey has suggested two ideas: (1) an increase in the federal tax credit for adoption of children and (2) a new program to provide services to pregnant high school and college students. There is no compromise on the issue of abortion. Killing innocent babies is wrong and no language will make it acceptable. Please pray that Senator Nelson will remain steadfast in his commitment to support the unborn. May he refuse to compromise.

This massive appropriations bill is scheduled for a Senate vote at 2:00 PM tomorrow. As printed in yesterday's post, H.R.3288 opens the door for public funding of abortion in the District of Columbia. Also under this bill, according to LifeNews.com, Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the United States, will receive the second largest appropriation; overseas groups that perform abortions will receive funding; abstinence programs will be replaced with condom promotions. House Passes Abortion-Funding Omnibus Bill

Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted in agreement with the conference report (bill with bicameral changes) on an omnibus spending package, H.R.3288 (Making Appropriations for the Departments of Transportation, HUD, and Related Agencies for FY 2010). This bill is now being debated on the Senate floor and is expected to be called to vote over the weekend. According to www.gop.gov, "the Financial Services appropriations bill has historically included a restriction on government (both federal and D.C.) funded abortions in the District of Columbia, the so-called Dornan amendment. The conference report renders the Dornan amendment ineffective by lifting the restriction on local D.C. funds to be used to pay for abortions in the District, without any limitations. Since Congress appropriates both federal and local funds, this change would mean that funds could be used for abortions." If this bill is passed by the Senate, it goes to President Obama for his signature. Our pro-abortion president has already called for the Senate and House to do away with the Donan amendment. According to a May 8, 2009, report in Philadelphia's "The Bulletin", President Obama "urged the Democratic-controlled House and Senate to repeal the ban on taxpayer-funded abortions in the District of Columbia." The Senate vote is the last obstacle for H.R. 3288 in its journey to becoming law. Thirty-five Senators have gone on record that they will filibuster (block action on the bill by debating indefinitely) the abortion-funding bill. Sixty votes are required to invoke cloture (stop the filibuster). Please pray that at least six more Senators will join the 35 Senators in filibustering the bill and stopping its progress. Otherwise, the bill will become law.

Darkness and Outright Lies: Government Funding of Abortion

When it comes to the issue of using taxpayer money to fund abortion, elected officials are guilty of working under the cloak of darkness and of telling outright lies. A current House-Senate Conference Committee, working on an omnibus appropriations bill that should be voted on before the end of this year, has inserted language that would overturn the Dornan amendment, which has traditionally prohibited federal funding of abortion in the District of Columbia. This move has taken place quietly while media and public attention is on the health care debate taking place now in Congress. The Senate bill, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, provides for federal subsidies to private insurance plans that cover abortion. Likewise, it allows the public option to include abortion services. On November 19, 2009, the office of Republican House Leader John Boehner published the following statements: "Just like the original 2,032-page, government-run health care plan from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) massive, 2,074-page bill would levy a new 'abortion premium' fee on Americans in the government-run plan. Beginning on line 7, p. 118, section 1303 under 'Voluntary Choice of Coverage of Abortion Services' the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run health plan. Leader Reid’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions (line 13, p. 120). What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run health plan. It’s right there beginning on line 11, page 122, section 1303, under 'Actuarial Value of Optional Service Coverage.' The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account – and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services." After a vote to table (and thus do away with) the Nelson amendment to prohibit federal funding of abortion, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (who claims to be pro-life) said his health care bill maintains the status quo. According to the "Las Vegas Sun", Harry Reid said, "Our health care bill now before this body respects life. This bill is about access to health care, not access to abortions." On September 9 in a speech to a joint session of Congress, President Obama said, "Under our plan no federal dollars will be used to fund abortion." President Obama has pushed the current abortion-funding health care bill to the Senate floor. In addition to the President's action that goes against his words to Congress, David Axelrod, Senior Advisor to the President, told CNN's "State of the Union" that President Obama will work with the Democrats in Congress to remove the Stupak Amendment (which explicitly prohibits federal funding of abortion) from the House health care bill.

A House-Senate conference committee is currently preparing an omnibus appropriations bill to complete funding needed for the federal government. The following issues are in danger of being included: the federal funding of abortion on demand in Washington, D. C.; the inclusion of coverage for elective abortions in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program, which covers over 7 million federal employees and dependents; and the prevention of any U.S. president from re-enacting the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits U.S. funding of foreign organizations that promote abortion. Thirty-five Republican Senators signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) stating that they disagree with changing the longstanding prohibitions on using taxpayer money to fund abortion and will "take full advantage of our rights under Senate rules to prevent massive taxpayer subsidies for abortions and abortion-related activities." The five Republican Senators who did not sign the letter are: Senator Susan Collins (Maine), Senator Olympia Snowe (Maine), Senator Thad Cochran (Mississippi), Senator Richard Lugar (Indiana), and Senator Lisa Murkowski (Alaska). Please pray that these 35 Senators will recognize every attempt made by pro-abortion legislators to promote abortion. May God give them wisdom and steadfastness to fight for the unborn. Nelson Amendment #2962 Tabled

In a vote of 54-45, the Senate passed The Motion to Table the Nelson Amendment #2962 to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R.3590). According to www.senate.gov, "a Senator may move to table any pending question. The motion is not debatable, and agreement to the motion is equivalent to defeating the question tabled. The motion is used to dispose quickly of questions the Senate does not wish to consider further." The vote to table the amendment required only a simple majority rather than the 60-vote margin needed to pass the amendment. Even though the amendment was tabled (and thus killed), Senators had to go on record with their stand on government funding of abortion. The two Republican Senators from Maine, Senator Susan Collins and Senator Olympia Snowe, joined the majority of Democrats in voting to table the amendment. Seven Democratic Senators (Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana; Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania; Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota; Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota; Senator Edward Kaufman of Delaware; Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska; Senator Mark Pryor of Arkansas) joined the ranks of the Republicans in voting against tabling the amendment. Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia did not vote. Of the Democrats who voted not to table, Senator Ben Nelson is the only one who has said he will not support the health care bill if it does not prohibit federal funding of abortion. Please pray that the other six Democratic Senators who opposed the motion to table will likewise refuse to vote YEA on any legislation that funds abortion with tax dollars. If this nation passes a health care bill that funds abortion, we will probably see the largest increase in our number of abortions since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.

According to Senate floor transcripts published on republican.senate.gov, Senator Ben Nelson (Democrat-Nebraska) called up the Nelson Amendment #2962 to H.R.3590 (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) late this afternoon. This amendment to the Senate abortion-funding health care bill would prohibit federal funding of abortion. Eight other pro-life Senators were co-sponsors. Senator Bob Casey, Jr. (Pennsylvania), the only Democrat other than Senator Nelson co-sponsoring the amendment, has said he would not block the final bill from passage if the amendment fails (reported in thehill.com). He plans to file an amendment to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that will explicitly prohibit the use of federal money to pay for abortion. According to politico.com, the language of the amendment is not finished, nor have pro-life groups (especially the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) had time to examine it. When his amendment does come to the floor for a vote, it is unlikely it will get the votes required for passage. If his amendment does not pass, Senator Nelson says he will not vote for the passage of the bill. He will not accept a compromise to the abortion funding issue. The Mikulski amendment to the Senate health care bill (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) was passed today by a vote of 61-39. If this amendment becomes law, government funded abortion could become law. The Mikulski amendment authorizes the expansion of preventive services for women based on recommendations from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which is under the Department of Health and Human Services. Kathleen Sebelius, the head of the Department of Health and Human Services, has a solid pro-abortion record. Should her department declare abortion to be preventive health care, every health care plan would be impacted. Most of the votes cast today were along party lines, Democrats supporting the amendment and Republicans opposing it. The YEAS totaled 61; this included three Republicans and two Independents. The NAYS totaled 39; this included two Democrats, Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin (who is pro-abortion but voted against the amendment due to the projected cost) and Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Senator Nelson is currently drafting an amendment that will explicitly prohibit federal funding of abortion. Please pray for Senator Nelson. One has only to see the criticism and ridicule aimed at Representative Bart Stupak (Michigan), who authored a similar amendment in the House, to know what Senator Nelson will have to face. May he stand strong against the onslaught of verbal pressure that will surely come his way.

According to Senator Murkowski's press release, her amendment "would prohibit the HHS secretary from defining or classifying abortion or abortion services as preventive care or as preventive services. Today the Senate began the tedious process of allowing Senators to present amendments to the health care bill (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act). The first amendment was proposed by Senator Barbara Mikulski (Maryland). Senate floor transcripts (www.republican.senate.gov) show that Senator Mikulski said, "In my amendment, we expand the key preventive services for women, and we do it in a way that is based on recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and from HRSA." HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, headed by Kathleen Sebelius. According to the Catholic League(www.catholicnewsagency.com), "Sebelius’ support for abortion is so far off-the-charts that she has been publicly criticized by the last three archbishops of Kansas City. In 1992, when Sebelius was a state legislator, Archbishop Ignatius Strecker rebuked her for leading what he dubbed a ‘death-march of the unborn.’ When Sebelius became governor in 2003, Archbishop James Keleher, citing her abortion record, asked her to move her inauguration interfaith service from Topeka’s Assumption Catholic Church. She refused. The current archbishop, Joseph Naumann, called her out on the issue: he challenged her to name one instance in her long legislative career where she supported limiting abortion rights. She could not. He subsequently asked her not to go to Communion." Any amendment that expands preventive services for women based on recommendations from the Department of Health and Human Services will likely include abortion services. The Mikulski amendment will probably be voted on tomorrow in the Senate. Please pray that it will be defeated.

"I think you need to have it eminently clear that no dollars that are federal tax dollars, directly or indirectly, are used to pay for abortions," Nelson said, according to The Hill newspaper. Senator Nelson has been an outspoken and, at times, lone wolf Democrat voting for the protection of the unborn. In 2003, Senator Nelson voted YES to ban partial-birth abortions; in 2004, he voted YES to assign a criminal penalty if someone harms an unborn baby when committing another crime; in 2005, he voted NO to allot $100 million to try to reduce teenage pregnancy through education and contraceptives; in 2006, he voted YES to notify parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions; in 2007, he voted NO to expand embryonic stem cell research; in 2008, he voted YES to prohibit minors from crossing state lines to obtain abortions; in 2008, he voted YES to define the unborn child as eligible for SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program); in 2009, he voted YES to restrict United Nations funding for population control policies (voting history from ontheissues.org). Although Senator Nelson does not have a 100% pro-life voting record (National Right to Life rated his record 75% pro-life), he has demonstrated a deep concern for the preservation of life. In his Confession of an Ex-Abortionist, Dr. Bernard Nathanson relates that he is personally responsible for 75,000 abortions. He was one of the founders of NARAL (originally called National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws). So what made him become a pro-life advocate? He saw the baby in the womb. "In 1973, I became director of obstetrics of a large hospital in New York City and had to set up a prenatal research unit, just at the start of a great new technology which we now use every day to study the foetus in the womb...Foetology makes it undeniably evident that life begins at conception and requires all the protection and safeguards that any of us enjoy." Dr. Nathanson had his physical eyes opened; he went on to have his spiritual eyes opened and was baptized in 1996. Why do doctors continue to choose money over the lives of babies they now can see on a TV screen? In Ephesians 4, we learn that our understanding can be darkened. Apart from God, we don't know right from wrong. Our hearts become hardened and lose sensitivity to God. In Julia Duin's article Bernard Nathanson's Conversion, we learn that pro-lifers had Dr. Nathanson on their prayer lists for some time. God opened the spiritual eyes of Dr. Nathanson. As Christians, we must not give up praying for those who are deeply involved in abortion services. May God open their spiritual eyes to see truth.

Belmont Abbey College, a private Catholic school in North Carolina, was founded on Benedictine traditions and values. In 2007 when he realized the college's health insurance plan included contraception, abortion, and sterilization coverage, William Thierfelder, president of Belmont Abbey College, acted to change the plan to make it in keeping with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Eight employees filed complaints. The North Carolina Equal Employment Opportunity Commission initially upheld the college's actions. Washington overruled the decision. The EEOC's district office in Charlotte is now accusing the college of violating Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act by discrimination based on gender. Only females take oral prescription contraceptives. President Thierfelder has said he will close down the college before going against the Church's teachings on the taking of innocent human life. This action of the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is a warning to pro-life citizens. Planned Parenthood Action is working to overturn the right of conscience rule because they say it allows "health care providers to deny patients vital health care information and services based on their own personal biases." This pro-abortion action group would like to force pro-life medical workers to perform abortions. Christians must pray for an end to this culture of abortion in our nation. In his Confession of an Ex-Abortionist, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, M.D. tells about the founding of the pro-abortion group NARAL (originally National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws). NARAL was instrumental in changing American laws from pro-life to pro-abortion. One of the group's tactics was playing the "Catholic card." "We systematically vilified the Catholic Church and its 'socially backward ideas' and picked on the Catholic hierarchy as the villain in opposing abortion." NARAL founders made it appear that only Catholic groups opposed abortion, and that it was only the Catholic leaders, not the laity, who were pro-life. Catholic pro-life groups have weathered those attacks and remain a strong voice for the protection of the unborn. What a debt we in this nation owe to the steadfast stand of the Catholics in fighting the evil of abortion! And the attacks continue. One has only to run an Internet search of Catholic involvement in the passage of the Stupak amendment (amendment that prohibits federal funding of abortion) to see that vilification of the Catholic Church continues. I am not a Catholic, but I thank God for the work Catholics have done to rescue babies from abortion. May God bless their work and reward their efforts with the reversal of Roe v Wade.

The party divisions in the Senate are as follows: Democrats: 58; Republicans: 40; Independents: 2. It is highly unlikely that an amendment prohibiting government funding of abortion will be approved. Federal funding of abortion will probably remain in the bill. When the final bill is brought to the floor for a vote, 60 votes will be needed to approve it. The Senate voted tonight to bring their health care bill, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, to the floor for debate. It was disappointing that Senator Ben Nelson (Nebraska) and Senator Bob Casey (Pennsylvania), who, according to lifenews.com, are the only Democrats in the Senate claiming to be pro-life, joined their party in support of this bill that provides for government funding of abortion. Since the Senate will not be in session next week (November 23-27), debate on the bill will begin when Senators return after the Thanksgiving break. Senator Orrin Hatch (Utah), who proposed two rejected amendments at the committee level to prohibit funding of abortion, has said he will introduce an amendment similar to the House's Stupak amendment to clarify that no government funds will pay for abortion. Please pray that all pro-life Senators will insist on such an amendment.

It appears that all 40 Republicans will vote "no". Senate majority leaders along with the White House are pressuring the 58 Democratic Senators and the two Independent Senators to vote "yes" on cloture. The vote will be close. In order for the Senate health care bill (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) to be brought up for debate on the floor of the Senate, a motion to proceed must be passed. This motion itself is subject to filibuster (tactics to block or delay a vote). The only way to overcome a filibuster is by cloture, which, on this issue, requires the support of three-fifths of the Senate (60 Senators). Enough Senators have threatened to filibuster the motion to proceed on the health care bill that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has filed for cloture; the vote will take place Saturday night. This will be a critical vote for the future of abortion funding. According to House Minority Leader John Boehner, the Senate health care bill contains federal funding of abortion. It calls for the collection of a monthly abortion premium from all members of the government-run plan; the Secretary of Health and Human Services (currently pro-abortion Kathleen Sebelius) would determine when abortion is allowed under the government plan. If pro-life Senators can stop cloture, the bill as is will not go to the floor of the Senate for further action. There are 40 Republican Senators who are expected to vote against cloture. Only one more vote is needed to stop the bill in its current form. Please pray pro-life Democrats will have the courage to go against their party leadership and demand a prohibition on government funding of abortion.

As I understand it, under the Senate bill, women who receive federal subsidies may purchase insurance coverage that includes abortion services; however, any payment for abortion must come from private funds. If this is the case, federal dollars are involved in funding abortion. Please pray that pro-life Senators will have wisdom to understand the ramifications of the language used in the bill. Victory Leads to Heated Opposition

NARAL, a leading pro-abortion organization, reports collecting 97,218 signatures in 72 hours for a petition calling for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to ensure that the Senate's version of health care legislation does not carry the language of the House's Stupak-Pitts Amendment (prohibiting all federal funding of abortion). According to the NARAL website, the Associated Press reported that NARAL is "sending out automated calls in 17 states to connect abortion rights supporters at the touch of a button to senators who are seen as potential swing votes on the issue, asking them to oppose the 'abortion ban.'" NARAL is not the only pro-abortion organization reacting to the Stupak Amendment. Planned Parenthood's website headlines the words: STOP STUPAK. Seeing this activity in the pro-abortion camp should spur those who support life to action. Don't neglect to pray. Pray for pro-life Senators; pray for pro-life Representatives. The Constitution, through its system of checks and balances, limits the legislative powers given to the President of the United States. However, the President can exert tremendous pressure on Representatives and Senators. He is the head of his political party, has access to unlimited media coverage, and is generally considered the most powerful person in the world. The President pushes his legislative agenda in private meetings with select lawmakers. White House Advisor, David Axelrod, indicated yesterday on CNN that President Obama dislikes the language of the Stupak Amendment to the House health care bill, which prohibits federal funding of abortion. As a result, discussions are currently underway to change it. Our President has a solid pro-abortion record: opposed the "right to conscience" rule (a rule giving freedom to health care professionals to refuse to participate in abortion procedures because of moral/religious beliefs); opposed the born-alive treatment law (providing medical treatment to babies born alive in failed abortions); opposed prohibiting minors from crossing state lines for abortions; in favor of expanding research on embryonic stem cells; opposed notifying parents of minors who cross state lines to get abortions. Join me in praying that God will convict our President that abortion is evil. May he humble himself before Almighty God and walk in His ways. Since the addition of the Stupak amendment (prohibiting federal funding of abortion) to the House health care bill, pro-abortion groups have been rallying supporters. According to a newsweek.com blog posted by Sarah Kliff, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards is trying to unite the entire liberal community in the fight against Stupak. "[We can] use this as an opportunity to reorganize and energize the movement," Richards said. She stated Planned Parenthood's plan includes "Smart lobbying strategies in Washington [and] very robust grassroots engagement." LifeNews.com reports Planned Parenthood is organizing a pro-abortion-funding lobbying day on December 2, and "other pro-abortion groups are jumping on board." This display of unity is troubling. In Genesis 11, we are told of another people that was unified and wanted to build a tower. In verse 6, we read: "The Lord said, 'If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.' Amendment to Senate Health Care Bill

The Senate health care bill is expected to be returned from the Congressional Budget Office, price tag attached, to the Senate next week. Hopefully, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will then make the contents of the bill public. In spite of the secrecy about the bill, speculation is that federally-funded abortion is included. Medpagetoday.com reports, "The Senate bill--though not released formally--uses the same language that was originally included in the House bill. That language says that at least one health plan in the exchange should provide abortion services, and at least one should not. It says no health plan would be discriminated against for its decision either way." The House bill, H.R.3962, was passed only after the attachment of an amendment that explicitly prevented federal funding of abortion. Will a similar amendment be offered in the Senate? Pro-abortion Senators are speaking out against such an amendment. Several anti-abortion Senators are requesting just such an amendment. After the passage of the Stupak Amendment to the House health care bill, there has been a surge of activity in the pro-abortion organizations. NARAL Pro-Choice America is urging women to donate money and take action to ensure that the Senate will not duplicate the Stupak Amendment in its health care bill. Planned Parenthood Action is asking for emergency contributions to ensure health care reform includes coverage for abortions. Furthermore, Planned Parenthood Action says the anti-choice extremists have the ear of lawmakers. Last March, President Obama announced his intention to nominate Judge David Hamilton to the United States 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. As a judge in Indiana, Hamilton has a long record of blocking the implementation of Indiana's 18 Hour Informed Consent Law, which requires that women seeking abortions have a face-to-face meeting with a health care provider to receive pertinent information concerning abortion at least 18 hours before an abortion is done. Senators who oppose Judge Hamilton have been successful in keeping the nomination from the floor for a vote. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he will call for a vote next week to stop the hold that has been placed on the nomination. "On the Issues" reports that Senator Reid voted NO on barring Health and Human Services grants to organizations that perform abortions (Senate Amendment to HR 3043). Intense pressure is being put on the Senate Majority Leader to pass health care legislation before the end of the year. Federal funding of abortion is a divisive issue in the Senate. Stupak Amendment Passes

The Stupak Amendment to the House health care bill (H.R. 3962) was passed on the House floor by a vote of 240 to 194! This amendment prohibits federal funding of abortion. Thank God for this victory! However, the battle still continues. Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, has vowed to "fight to remove this provision as the process goes to the Senate." Terry O'Neill, president of National Organization for Women, has called on President Obama "to refuse to sign any health care bill that restricts women's access to affordable, quality reproductive health care." Planned Parenthood is calling on President Obama to make good on his campaign promise "to put reproductive health care at the center of his reform plan. Supporters of women's health voted for him and contributed to his campaign in record numbers--and now it's time for the president to reaffirm his commitment to women's health, and demand that Congress reject any bill that leaves women worse off under health care reform than they are today." This action on the Speaker's part came after House leadership was unable to reach a compromise agreement with pro-life Democrats on the issue. According to Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life, "The Ellsworth Amendment allows the public option to pay for abortion on demand and allows government dollars to go to private plans that cover abortion. This amendment would undermine the only pro-life amendment that truly protects life in health care reform: the Stupak-Pitts Amendment." According to the "New York Times", House leaders are indicating a willingness to include compromise language concerning abortion coverage in their health care bill, HR 3962. House leaders are vehemently against the Pitts-Stupak Amendment, which prohibits federal funding of abortion; they fear the amendment will pass if brought to the floor for a vote. Facing a possible blocking of the health care bill by pro-life Democrats if a floor vote on the Pitts-Stupak Amendment is not allowed, House leaders have been working with pro-life Representative Brad Ellsworth (IN) to put new language into HR 3962. Congressman Chris Smith (NJ), a leading pro-life Representative, says this potential compromise would still allow abortion funding. "The new language does nothing to change the fact that the public option will be authorized to pay for abortion," he said. "If they truly want to keep abortion out of the health care bill, they must accept the Stupak-Pitts amendment that says clearly and plainly that there can be no funding for abortion and no government subsidies for plans that cover abortion." National Right to Life legislative director, Douglas Johnson, said the compromise language "is intended only to wrap the pro-abortion provisions in additional layers of concealment. The latest version being circulated contains a money-laundering scheme that is truly laughable." Many cities have "sunshine laws" which require the local government to have meetings that are open and public, not meetings behind closed doors. The very fact that work being done on health care reform in both the House of Representatives and the Senate has been kept secret gives citizens cause for concern. Jesus said in John 3:19 that men "loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." House leaders say that the obfuscated language in their health care bill does not authorize government funded abortion, but they will not let an amendment that clearly prohibits government funding of abortion be voted on for fear that it might pass. It appears that House leaders do not want this beam of light shed on their bill. Why? Could it be that they are covering up the truth? KBTX television reported November 1, 2009, that Abby Johnson, a dedicated pro-choice believer, resigned on October 6 as director of Planned Parenthood in Bryan, Texas. She had worked in the organization for 8 years. Already disillusioned with her job because she was being pressured to bring in more abortions, Ms. Johnson witnessed an ultrasound of an abortion in which the baby just crumpled. She knew then she could not do her job any longer. She now supports the pro-life Coalition for Life, which is in a building down the street from her former place of employment; she has even prayed with others outside Planned Parenthood. I suspect that the pro-life group she has joined once prayed for her. God answers prayer! Continue to pray for pro-abortion members of the House and Senate. Critical Need for Prayer

The United States of America is on the precipice of the greatest wave of abortions since 1973, when Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure. The House health care reform bill (HR 3962) opens the door for government support and funding of abortion. It does not appear that the manager's amendment (the tweaking of the bill by the leadership) will change this; nor is there any indication that the Rule's Committee will allow a vote on an amendment to prohibit federal funding of abortion. If these predictions prove correct, it is imperative that pro-life Democrats resist the pressure to vote along party lines; their votes are needed to defeat the rule prohibiting a floor vote on federal funding of abortion. Fox News has reported that the mother-in-law of Representative Bart Stupak (a Michigan Representative who has spearheaded the campaign to bring the issue of government funding of abortion to a floor vote) died unexpectedly last Sunday. Stupak is not expected to be in Washington this week. Please pray for Representative Stupak as he faces this death in his family. Please pray that the momentum he has created to stop government funding of abortion will not be diminished.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Cheboyan, Michigan, Representative Bart Stupak, one of the leaders of the House Pro-Life Caucus and co-sponsor of the Pitts-Stupak Amendment prohibiting federal funding of abortion, said he could end up voting for the health care reform bill even if it did include government funding for abortion, provided his amendment was allowed a vote on the House floor. If the amendment did not pass, Stupak stated he would have stayed true to his principles and could still vote in favor of the bill. I pray that Representative Stupak will rethink this position. Abortion is the taking of a human life. How can one stay true to the principle of preserving life in the womb while casting a vote to provide funding for ending life in the womb? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has told the minority party not to expect a chance to amend the health care bill when it gets to the floor. Currently the bill includes an amendment by Representative Lois Capps (CA) that requires at least one health insurance plan in each of the proposed state exchanges to cover abortion. People who receive federal subsidies for health insurance would be required to buy their insurance in the exchanges. According to Douglas Johnson of National Right to Life, voting for the House health care bill would be a vote for federal funding of abortion on demand. Please continue to pray for wisdom and discernment for the Representatives who are committed to stop any federal funding of abortion.

HR 3962 Affordable Health Care for America Act

The House of Representatives unveiled its proposed health care reform bill today. Staff aides have stated that compromise wording on the abortion issue still needs to be resolved before the bill gets to the floor. The bill next goes to the House Committee on Rules, the gatekeeper to the House floor, where the time limit for floor debate and what amendments, if any, will be allowed to come to the floor will be decided. Then the bill goes to the floor for a vote on acceptance of the proposed rules. Because it is very likely that an amendment to prohibit all government funding of abortion in subsidized insurance plans would pass if offered on the floor, House leadership will most likely not allow such an amendment. The only recourse pro-life Representatives will have is to get together enough votes to reject the rule for debate. Representative Bart Stupak (MI) continues to seek support among colleagues to do just that. Please pray that Representatives will insist on a vote being taken to prohibit government funding of abortion.

Representative Chris Van Hollen (MD), assistant to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA), indicated today that those working on the final health care reform bill in the House will come up with wording that will satisfy a "majority" of those for and against federal funding of abortion. This leads us to the question: Can there be a compromise on the abortion-funding issue? Can right and wrong compromise? Light and Darkness

Throughout the Bible, we find references to light and darkness. God is Light; there is no darkness in Him (see 1 John 1:9). Jesus (the Light) came into the world, but people loved darkness more than Light because they didn't want the evil deeds they were doing in darkness to be revealed (see John 3:19). Could it be that some Representatives in the House don't want their stand on abortion to be revealed? Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has indicated she will not allow a floor vote on Representative Stupak's (MI) amendment to prohibit taxpayers' funds from paying for or subsidizing abortion. Our Constitution allows that each House may determine the rules of its proceedings. The House Rules Committee will set the terms for debating and amending the healthcare bill when it is brought to the floor. According to Stupak's statement in an interview with CNSNews.com, House Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (NY) told him there is no way her committee will write a rule that allows a floor vote on his amendment. Stupak is trying to get enough votes to defeat this prohibition. If a majority of the House does not vote to approve the rules for debate, the healthcare bill itself cannot be brought to the floor. If Stupak can get 218 votes against the rule, he will win. Currently he has 220 votes, but Representatives could change their minds when the actual vote is taken. Much pressure will be put on them to fall in line with the leadership. Pray that these Representatives who have admitted Stupak's amendment should be brought to the floor for a vote will have the courage to stand firm. May God shine His light on what is going on in darkness in our Capitol.

Today Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid left his closed-door health care meeting briefly to announce that a government-backed health insurance program will be included in the Senate health care reform bill. He hopes to send the bill to the Congressional Budget Office soon where a price tag will be attached. Reid made no comment on abortion, which leads me to think there will be no prohibition on taxpayer funded abortion in the bill presented to the Senate. My concern is that the semantics of the bill may make it appear that federal money will not go to fund abortion. There are many Christian Senators and Representatives in Washington. Public Insurance Plan: Require or Allow Abortion?

In the fiery words going back and forth between right-to-life and right-to-abortion groups, I have found half-truths and exaggerations on both sides. So, the question presents itself: What do the healthcare reform bills in the Senate and House of Representatives really allow concerning abortion? According to FactCheck.org, a division of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center that researches the accuracy of political claims, the bills now before Congress don't REQUIRE federal money to support abortion coverage, but the House and Senate legislation would ALLOW a new public insurance plan to cover abortions, even with language added that technically forbids using public funds to pay for them. FactCheck.org goes on to state that "Obama has said in the past that reproductive services would be covered by his public plan, so it's likely that any new federal insurance plan would cover abortion unless Congress expressly prohibits that." Join with me in praying that the House and Senate bills that are being worked on behind closed doors will include explicit language prohibiting federal money paying for abortion. Is Abortion Really Health Care?

Surveys by the Alan Guttmacher Institute and data from seven state health/statistics agencies indicate that about 98% of abortions in the United States are not for reasons of rape, incest, or risk to maternal health. (The actual percentages are estimated as follows: in cases of rape or incest, 0.3%; in cases of risk to maternal health or life, 1%; and in cases of fetal abnormality, 0.5%). This leads us to question why abortion is even considered a part of health care. Whose health is being cared for? Certainly not the baby's! Right of Conscience

In September, the Christian Medical Association sent a petition with over 10,000 signatures to the President and members of Congress stating their concern that the healthcare reform legislation presented does not protect the right of conscience of healthcare professionals. David Stevens, president of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations, says not only is right of conscience not protected, but there are direct attacks on right of conscience. Healthcare providers could be forced to participate in abortions if there is no conscience protection. Please pray for Christian healthcare workers. Since 1973, Abortions Nearing 50 Million

The number of abortions in the United States since 1973 (Roe v. Wade) is approaching 50,000,000. If the federal government begins funding abortions, the number will most likely soar. Please don't grow weary in praying for an end to legalized abortion in the United States. Closed meetings are still taking place in the House of Representatives and the Senate to finalize health care reform bills. In these meetings, there is no voice crying out for the preservation of life in the womb.
